In 2001, Mr. Jones experienced a breathtaking performance by the nationally renowned Chicago Children’s Choir, and returned to Boston determined to replicate this innovative program, as there were no organizations in Boston that effectively combine a mission for artistic excellence with an agenda for social change. He gathered the support of civic leaders and, after a year of planning and pilot projects, the Boston Children’s Chorus was launched in October of 2003. Since the BCC's inception, our programs have grown rapidly. Twenty children were accepted into an initial pilot program, and in the current season, we have nearly 300 singers representing over 50 of Boston's urban and suburban neighborhoods participating in nine different choirs in four Boston locations: the South End, Allston-Brighton, downtown Boston and Dorchester. In recent years, BCC's growth in numbers of children and choirs required a program and artistic staff reorganization and expansion that included the hiring of a new full-time Program Manager, a new part-time Assistant Artistic Director and a new part-time Accompanist. Our growth also required us to identify and secure larger office and rehearsal space at 112 Shawmut Avenue in Boston, where five of our nine choirs come to rehearse and receive music education instruction each week. The BCC has also launched this new website with enhanced functionality and branding to keep pace with our growing reputation as a key player in the choral world. The new staff, move to a larger space and the new website are strategic organizational steps that are critical for our continued growth and development, and provide the platform to support our ambitious agenda. |
