Choir Level Descriptions
Premier, ages 12-18: (To be named later)
The Premier level presents a stimulating, comprehensive, and demanding program in choral repertoire and musical skills, as well as a greater number of varied performing experiences. Concentration is placed on complex and challenging music and higher, more demanding expectations in sight-singing skills. Vocal technique is expected to become more consistent, and increased practice is necessary to hear and learn more challenging and diverse genres of choral music. Singers are expected to work independently and exhibit advanced rehearsal techniques. An ambitious schedule of performances allows Premier level singers to share their talents and musicianship locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally.
Advanced, ages 10-16: (Concert Choir and YMVC)
The Advanced level offers singers a more challenging children’s choir experience, through a more demanding repertoire, more advanced musical concepts, and a greater number of performing experiences. The expectations and personal responsibility of singers are expanded and the training more intensive. The Concert Choir will tour regionally.
Intermediate, ages 10-14: (Lyric, Dorchester House II)
The Intermediate level requires greater individual attentiveness, vocal skills, and theory comprehension requirements, while offering singers expanded repertoire and performance opportunities. To enter the intermediate level, singers must demonstrate basic vocal and musical competence and training-level sight-singing concepts and skills. Choristers learn to be more confident and independent in their work. Rehearsal concentration and performance demands are increased.
Training, ages 7-12: (Treble, Villa Victoria, Dorchester House I, West End House)
The Training level provides the foundation for progress and development in the Boston Children’s Chorus. Working together as a choir and learning important musical basics, such as theory, interval training, rhythm, and sight-singing techniques, are major goals. Attention span and concentration are a point of focus, as is practice and development in vocal techniques. Singers at this level are introduced to a wide variety of basic repertoire.
