Greetings!
annette and anthony pict

A warm welcome to the new members of our BCC family and welcome back to those who are returning this season! The office is buzzing once again, as our singers and their parents return for our 2008-2009 5th Anniversary Season. This year we have over 300 singers across all nine choirs, our largest number yet!

We have very exciting news to share. Our Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Concert, which has been broadcast live on WCVB-TV Channel 5 for the last three years, will be broadcast nationally this year, reaching more than 80% of US media markets! We are thrilled to announce that our host will be Academy Award winning actor Louis Gossett, Jr. We are so proud that the Boston Children's Chorus will be presenting Boston to the rest of the nation as a city that embraces diversity and the message of Dr. King. We also extend our sincere appreciation to State Street Corporation, our National Presenting Season Sponsor, and to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, our Local Media Sponsor.

We are also eager to share with you the news that our Premier Choir and Young Men's Ensemble will be travelling to Jordan for our 2009 International Tour. This is such a truly amazing opportunity for our singers to experience firsthand the culture and music of a country so different from our own, while proudly representing Boston and the United States as Ambassadors of Harmony. Over the summer, Director of Operations and Programs David Howse and Artistic Director Anthony Trecek-King travelled to Jordan on an exploratory visit where they connected with many leading organizations in the Kingdom. We look forward to building on those relationships as we begin planning our travels for the Summer of 2009. The experience promises to be a life altering one for our singers and for youth of Jordan.

This season we welcome four new staff members; Sarah Koonce - Accompanist, Julia Carey and John Reynolds - Teaching Fellows, and Brad Fugate - Vocal Coach. We also welcome back Heather Chu who returns as a Vocal Coach this season. As we kick off our 5th anniversary season, we look forward to a year filled with music, laughter, and learning, and as always, we are excited to share it with you!

Camp 2008
Almost 40 new training level singers and seven Premier Choir Mentors participated in the five-day Camp at Roxbury Community College from August 11- 15, 2008.

Assistant Artistic Director Michele Adams, the faculty and our wonderful student Mentors did an outstanding job engaging the singers. In addition to rehearsals, throughout the week singers took classes in music theory, movement, voice, Alexander Technique, as well as swimming at a nearby Boys & Girls Club and enjoyed a pizza party and an ice cream social.

The Mentors had valuable, hands-on opportunities to exercise and build upon their leadership and teaching skills. Georgia, Premier Choir singer and a second year Camp Mentor who recently received training in a method of teaching music called Kodaly, was given an opportunity to create and teach a class at Camp. She created lesson plans, which were reviewed by staff, undertook a dry run, and taught the class by herself.

The parents were thrilled and amazed with the singer's accomplishments in just a week's time. It was a very successful program and Friday evening's culminating concert went very smoothly and was well received. Both singers and families left with a sense of excitement for the BCC and an anticipation of the upcoming season.

Congratulations on a job well done to all of our Camp 2008 Mentors! Thank you to Georgia, Paul, Grant, Casey, Cyrus, Elizabeth and Isabel!
Male Singer

QUESTION: What is the term used to describe an adult male singer who uses his falsetto to sing in the alto or mezzo-soprano range? (the answer can be found at the end of this newsletter).
