Greetings!
annette and anthony mexico 2

Summer is coming to a close and it's time to begin a new season at the Boston Children's Chorus. This will be our fifth performance season and we are thrilled to have come such a long way. We would like to extend a warm welcome to all the new BCC singers and families, who will be key players in the continuing success of the Chorus. To our returning singers and their families: welcome back!

We've had a very busy summer. The Concert Choir toured Mexico, performing at venues in three cities to sold-out crowds and standing ovations. They returned home in time to rehearse with the Boston Pops for the 4th of July Celebration on the Esplanade. Our Concert Choir was joined on stage by a select group of our newly promoted singers. We hosted our Camp for Young Singers where forty-one new chorus members explored their vocal potential and discovered different cultural traditions through the diverse musical repertoire in our week-long program. On the last day of Camp the students presented a concert of music from around the world at Roxbury Community College for friends and families.

Entering the new season, we welcomed four new staff members: Mike Mavilia - Program Manager; Jullieanne Doherty - Program Coordinator; Valeris Ross - Accompanist; and Michele Adams - Assistant Artistic Director. We are very excited to start the year in our new beautiful home at 112 Shawmut Avenue where our central choirs will rehearse in our new state-of-the-art space. We look forward to sharing it with you on September 10th for our Open House and Dedication of the Margaret Stewart Lindsay Rehearsal Hall.

We enthusiastically anticipate our upcoming season and thank you for supporting the Boston Children's Chorus!

The Concert Choir and a select group of newly promoted singers performed with the Boston Pops at the 4th of July Celebration on the Esplanade! This was one of our most exciting performances and one of our greatest honors. The event drew nearly half a million people of all ages to the Esplanade and was seen by over seven million viewers on local and national TV.

With most of the singers having just returned from their Mexico tour, they were tired but excited to have the opportunity to perform at such a prestigious event.

The weather on the 4th wasn't perfect but it didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the crowd or the Chorus. Early in the program the Chorus sang John Williams' "Dry Your Tears Afrika" and Jill Galinas' "American Pride." Later on they took the stage again immediately after John Mellencamp's performance to lead the crowd in a sing-a-long of patriotic songs.

It was a heart-felt, energetic performance enjoyed by all! The BCC was hailed by the Boston Globe as "angelic and dazzling" and the Boston Herald remarked that our singers were "charming and cherubic." This BCC milestone will surely be a memory that will stay with our singers the rest of their lives.

Casey Accardi, member of the BCC Premier Choir, has started the BCC Blog! Check it out at http://bostonchildrenschorus.blogspot.com. The first entry describes BCC's performance at the 4th of July.

Casey was inspired to initiate this on-line journal for BCC singers after she discovered a blog by The Young People's Chorus of New York City. She started this blog so people could learn more about the chorus and understand it on a personal level. She shared this idea with many of her BCC friends and they agreed it is a wonderful way for people to gain a chorister's point of view of the performances and a behind the scenes look at BCC activities.

She plans to continue facilitating the blog and hopes to receive entries from BCC singers.

Camp 2007
On August 6, newly accepted members at the training level of the Boston Children's Chorus gathered at Roxbury Community College for the BCC's Camp for Young Singers. During this week-long day camp, the 41 seven-to-twelve-year-olds learned to express their vocal and musical ability and gained insight into their future as BCC singers.

Artistic Director Anthony Trecek-King taught a daily music education class where the children began learning to read and write music while Assistant Artistic Director Michele Adams worked with campers in a daily voice class. But Camp wasn't only about music theory; other classes included movement, dance, cultural differences, African drumming and performance preparation. Some of our guest teachers included staff of Urban Improv, Origination, and Project Think Different. The campers also enjoyed a trip to the Franklin Park Zoo, swimming at the Boys and Girls Club and an ice cream social.

The week's educational activities were carefully designed and integrated. Rhythmic concepts and vocal techniques learned in music education, voice classes, movement, and drumming were all directly applied in group rehearsals as the campers prepared repertoire for the end-of-week concert. The end result was a stunning transformation in the children's confidence, stage presence and singing as an ensemble. At the concert Anthony Trecek-King remarked on their hard work during the week and their sense of pride and readiness to join the BCC for regular rehearsals in September.

These young campers are now better prepared to join the BCC, with new friends, new skills and an excitement about the power of music.

Camp rehearsal
At this year's Camp for Young Singers, six experienced BCC singers entering the Premier Choir joined us as mentors. Accepted through an application process, they served as models for the new singers, supported staff during Camp classes and activities and learned lessons in leadership, creativity and conflict resolution.

The mentors came to the BCC the week before camp to train with the BCC program staff. They discussed what it meant to be a leader and mentor, who were important mentors in their lives, the qualities those mentors possessed and how those people affected their lives. At Camp the mentors took their roles very seriously and were eager to put their new skills to work. They shined at the Franklin Park Zoo as they attended to the young campers and their safety. During classes the mentors served as examples, often singing to exhibit different musical and vocal qualities. They were an asset to both campers and staff in all the rehearsals for the performance. They also presented a panel discussion, giving the young campers an opportunity to ask them questions. By the end of the week, the older singers had developed into true mentors, achieving the qualities of leadership they had discussed before camp began.

The 2007 Camp for Young Singers Mentors were:

BCC's Concert Choir toured Mexico from June 26-July 2 visiting Mexico City, Queretaro, and San Miguel de Allende for a rich musical and cultural experience.

The Mexico tour provided 39 of our young singers the opportunity to learn about a new culture by singing and forming friendships across global boundaries. To help the children become acquainted with Mexican life and culture prior to their trip, BCC staff worked with Mexican consultant Rosalba Solis of Spontaneous Celebration to create a specially designed cultural orientation program. The four-session educational program for the singers covered topics such as History, Food, Urban Youth Culture, Language, Myths, Geography, Music and Dance.

During the tour, families in Mexico hosted our singers and staff. Through this home stay program, all were able to truly experience and share each others' lives and culture, and the travelers from Boston came to understand and appreciate life in Mexico.

Our singers also had the opportunity to share their gift of music. They presented three standing-room-only performances, one in each city they visited. At each concert the singers introduced the repertoire in Spanish, to the delight of the audience, which was moved to offer standing ovations for our singers. BCC also partnered with ANYEL, a non-profit arts organization and music program that serves disadvantaged youth. BCC singers served as mentors to the children at ANYEL and the performance in San Miguel de Allende was a benefit concert for the organization. The friendships our singers developed in Mexico will endure long after the tour.
We want to thank everyone whohelped us with our recent move and build-out. Our new home welcomes BCC singers into a state-of-the-art rehearsal space. As we extend our programs to a larger part of the Boston community over the next year, our new space will accommodate this growth in our singer population. We are still updating our records and hope we have thanked all of the generous donors who supported us in this campaign.
