Seasons Greetings!
AD/ED

For the BCC, the holiday season means many rehearsals, many performances and so many wonderful things to accomplish! As 2006 comes to a close, our singers and their families are busily weaving rehearsals and performances into their already full schedules. Staff are working tirelessly, tending to arrangements for many different events. The BCC has become a “hot ticket” in the Boston arts world, and we now need to turn away many performance requests. We all feel a combination of exhaustion and exhilaration to be a part of the phenomenon known as the Boston Children’s Chorus!

Our children are singing so marvelously well! Choristers recently performed at the Macy’s tree lighting, and the City of Boston’s tree lighting, televised on WCVB-TV Channel 5. Their sound is luminous and wonderfully clear, the result of hard work and dedication -- and frequent rehearsals. Each choral group – we now have seven – is making beautiful music together, and choristers are feeling rightfully proud of their musical growth and accomplishments.

The demands of a busy December schedule continue to build, culminating in the highlight of our performance season, our signature event: the annual celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Our upcoming MLK concert on Monday, January 15 at Jordan Hall, will be televised live on WCVB-TV Channel 5 (for the second consecutive year). This year’s theme, “Struggle, Unity, Spirit & Freedom,” is guaranteed to bring you to your feet and elevate your soul. Tickets for both the afternoon open dress rehearsal and the evening concert are now on sale, and we expect to sell-out rather quickly again this year. Click here for ticket information.

We wish you a very harmonious holiday season, and look forward to sharing with you the King Holiday celebration.

Stay tuned!

Anthony Trecek-King, Artistic Director

So many performances, so little time! Our children have been very much in demand as hard-working choristers with the BCC. November and December were especially full of activity. Some highlights:

November 18: Dorchester House Neighborhood Choir sang at the Women’s Lunch Place, a shelter for homeless women and children; November 24: All choirs performed at the Macy’s Holiday Tree Lighting in Downtown Crossing; November 30; Concert Choir sang at the City of Boston Tree Lighting Ceremony on the Boston Common, an event televised on WCVB-TV Channel 5; December 2: the Neighborhood Choir at Villa Victoria sang at the Boston Center for the Arts Holiday Tree Lighting in the South End; December 3: Concert Choir performed at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem;
December 7: Lyric Choir was featured at the "Thursday Night Concert Series," Broad Institute (MIT); December 8: Dorchester House Neighborhood Choirs sang at the Kwanzaa celebration dinner for UMOJA, the Black Student Alliance of Boston University; December 9: Members of all choirs participated in the Polar Express fundraiser at Gillette Stadium for the Ronald McDonald House, a nonprofit organization providing a home-away-from home to families who have children with cancer; December 10: Treble Choir sang with the Greater Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra (GBYSO); December 10: Members of all choirs sang at a service at First Church of Boston, also broadcast on WERS 88.9 FM.

MLK06
CONCERT CHOIR

"I thought it was pretty cool to be a part of a professional CD recording. It was even more fun to sing with international choirs and get to know my host family in Chicago. We even sang at the home opener game of the Boston Red Sox – and this is not even ¼ of the fun we’re having this year at the BCC!!"

Energy and enthusiasm simply radiate from Concert Choir member Branden Miles, age 11, as he recalled some peak moments with the Boston Children’s Chorus.

The Concert Choir is the BCC’s premier performing and touring ensemble for advanced singers in grades 4-12. These choristers commit to twice weekly rehearsals, no small feat for middle- and high-schoolers with many academic pressures. They experience the life-changing power of music as they develop music theory and performance skills. Members of the Concert Choir perform choral works which feature intricate harmony and music from many cultures and languages around the world.

Another type of learning takes place at each rehearsal and performance, which is critical in shaping our singers into engaged and participating members of society. They learn tolerance, to understand and appreciate each other and themselves; they learn to work together, to break down social barriers; and they learn to be players engaged in their community.

At the Boston Children’s Chorus, a musical education and a social education both are values we are passionate about. Members of our Concert Choir demonstrate these values as they serve as “ambassadors” for their city.

The Parent Association wants to extend thanks for all the wonderful support families have given to the Chorus community these past few months:
- the delicious potluck meals (so tasty and fun!)
- the pizza dinner at Uno's...the kids had their own table and the adults could sit together and relax a bit!
- the successful pointsetta sale!
- the BCC singer /family directory
- sitting at the sign-in tables downstairs at rehearsals
- and of course, making sure your singers are there at all the rehearsals and performances!

We'll keep you posted for how we can work together to support the Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration weekend concerts. We hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season.
