Singer Spotlight: Sade Brooks and Jocelyne Chin

BCC News

Sade Brooks

Hi, BCC community! My name is Sade. I'm 17 years old and I sing in the Premier Choir at BCC. I first joined BCC because my mother thought it would be a great opportunity for me.

Q. How long have you been in BCC?

A. This season will be my ninth and final season with the Boston Children's Chorus.

Q. Why is BCC special to you?

A. BCC has expanded my perspective of people, and the world. Before we start most pieces, we're given context and lightly analyze the lyrics. We try and channel the composers emotion, all while relating the piece to our own lives. Then we share. There are moments of laughter, then there are emotional moments. Either way, as a chorus, we connect with each other. This is what makes BCC special. There's a strong sense of unity and understanding among us, whether it's in practice or on stage, and this is what I will miss the most. I'll also miss all of our adventures.

Q. What is your most memorable moment at BCC thus far?

A. My most memorable moment at BCC is when we toured London, and got to sing with all of the international choirs.

Q. What do you do when you're not singing?

A. When I'm not singing, chances are I'm with friends and family or preparing for college.

Q.  What is your spirit animal?

A. My spirit animal is a goat because like them, I am the greatest of all time.

Jocelyne Chin

Hi BCC Family! My name is Jocelyne, I'm 15 years old, and I sing in Premier Choir in BCC. I joined BCC when I was 7 or 8, and mainly, it was because I really liked to sing at home and my parents thought it'd do me good to try out a choir.

Q. How long have you been in BCC?

A. This is going to be my eighth season with BCC.

Q. Why is BCC special to you?

A. As cliche as it sounds, BCC really is my second home. I've met some of my closest friends here, and I look forward to every single rehearsal. I know that even if I come in dead tired, I'll still leave happy two hours later. I quite literally plan my life around BCC (just ask my mom), and it's always my top priority when I have schedule conflicts just because whatever time I spend here is precious to me.

Q. What is your most memorable moment at BCC thus far?

A. I have so many great moments that I can remember. Of this past year, though, I would say my favorite memory is taking pictures for the Carnegie Hall trip with Premier Choir and Young Men's Ensemble! I was kneeling on my seat for the whole ride there and most of the way back taking pictures, but it was all worth the pictures I got. I also enjoyed taking six hours with my brother to individually tune 15 or so water bottles to five(?) notes apiece for "Water" by Anders Edenroth, one of our songs this year.

Q. What do you do when you're not singing?

A. When I'm not singing, I do a lot of schoolwork, but besides that, I play violin and am currently preparing for ASTA-CAP level nine (it's like a violin exam- there are ten levels altogether). I ride horses once to twice a week, though I wish I had enough time for a consistent twice a week. I also play around with writing fiction, drawing, photography, reading books, and bingewatching Madam Secretary (on CBS) with my family (we have one more season to finish off before the new one starts).

Q. What is your spirit animal?

A. I've never really thought about it, to be honest. I suppose I'll just say that I'm some type of owl that can't fly for reasons unspecified?
