"How important it is for us to celebrate our heroes and she-roes."

Maya Angelou's wise words remind us to rethink our cultural narrative and look to the contributions women have made to society. This concert, Lift Every Voice: Her Song, recognizes and celebrates the achievements of women who transcended obstacles and barriers to raise their voices against injustice, create great art, and make new discoveries about our planet. From Nina Simone's I Wish I Knew to Sisters Are Doin' It For Themselves by the Eurythmics, the choirs present a program which highlights inspiring stories of women’s empowerment. The centerpiece of this concert, Cecila MacDowell’s Everyday Wonders: The Girl From Aleppo, tells the extraordinary story of Nujeen Mustafa, a Kurdish teenager with cerebral palsy forced to flee from Syria as a refugee, and considers the experience of a young woman displaced from her home and thrown into an inhospitable, brutal, and often inhumane world.

We are joined for this performance by guest artist, Melinda Doolittle, who will perform with the choir as well as singing her own hit song That's Life. The concert concludes with all of BCC’s singers performing Hosier’s Nina Cried Power and Audra Day’s Rise Up’– moving anthems which encourage us to reexamine who holds power, and recognize the strength of unified voices in striving for a more equal society.
